Not Just Another New Year’s Resolution

Meet LeAnn

My name is LeAnn and my story begins in November of 2017. I was desperate, overweight, sedentary, unhealthy, and suffering from depression. Needless to say, I was at a low point in my life, I knew that I needed to do something to help myself in all these areas….. but what?

I spent weeks researching, scrolling social media feeds, looking at different programs, and the thousands of fitness challenges out there.  Most of these challenges lasted between 2 weeks and 30 days, I wanted something that would last past “a New Year’s resolution”, I wanted a lifestyle change.

About mid-December, while scrolling through Instagram, I ran across a post from someone who had signed up for the 365 Mile Challenge. I had my doubts but went to the website anyway. Here it was! A challenge that lasted all year, seemed simple enough, and encouraged you to get outdoors… something I’ve been passionate about my whole life, but had lost sight of.

After seeing what the challenge was all about; 1 mile a day, every day, for the whole year… I immediately signed up. I had no idea what I was “getting into”, but took the leap of faith and joined. Being a mom, it’s sometimes hard to justify spending money on yourself, but the challenge was cheaper than a lot of the others and definitely cheaper than monthly gym memberships.

That leap of faith has been the best decision I’ve made for myself in years, and has changed my life and outlook in so many ways! The ways the 365 Mile Challenge has impacted my life are:

  • Gotten me more active
  • Boosted my confidence
  • Given me new friends
  • I no longer suffer from depression
  • I’ve lost 30 pounds
  • I feel like I’ve “found myself” again

The support and inspiration from the 365 community has been so uplifting and has gotten me through the hard times this year!

I completed my 365 miles on December 8th of that first year. Starting out, I never thought I would ACTUALLY accomplish the goal. But somehow despite sicknesses, surgeries, the days I “just wasn’t motivated enough”, and all that life can throw at you…. I DID IT!!!! And I’m still doing it! This is my third year in the challenge and I’ve never looked back.

If you want or need something to do daily, to improve yourself mentally and physically, if you want to meet amazing people and make new friends, or have endless support/inspiration from hundreds of other people like you…. I highly recommend joining. You can have all of these things in one place, you won’t regret it!!!

Shenandoah National Park

Since moving to the Richmond area a little over a year and a half ago, I have been lucky enough to travel to Shenandoah National Park multiple times. It is a stunning park with so much to offer visitors. I have explored several of the trails (though there are so many more I haven’t hit *yet*). Here are a few of my stories and some tips for hiking in Shenandoah:

Precious Times with Precious Company

I would like to share a bit about my visits with my favorite person to hike, walk and just enjoy life with - my now 43 year old daughter.  My daughter is a HS History teacher and lives some 1200 miles south of my home here in western NY.  Some years ago...

Walking in Circles

I can recall walking in the Texas desert with my grandma while she searched for rocks to put in her rock polisher so she could make us grandkids necklaces.  Just walking and wondering what’s on the other side of the next hill was one of my favorite childhood...
